After a Root Canal Procedure

Patients usually only experience minor tenderness in the tooth and surrounding gum tissue following endodontic procedures. This “bruised” feeling usually lasts a few days and tapers off over the next few weeks following treatment. Please do not be worried.  This discomfort is a normal reaction and will not affect the outcome of your treatment. Discomfort may be alleviated by taking ibuprofen (Advil), aspirin, or acetaminophen (Tylenol) as directed. If the doctor feels it is necessary he/she may prescibe you additional medications.

Occasionally, a patient may have what is referred to as a “flare up”. A small percentage of patients may experience an increase in symptoms after treatment. More rare than the minor tenderness most people have, this is also a normal reaction and will not affect the outcome of your treatment.  If you begin having pain that is not alleviated by over the counter pain medication or you start to have swelling, please call our office at Redwoods Endodontics Phone Number (707) 546-2887. A doctor is available for consultation at all times should a problem arise after your treatment.

You must schedule an appointment with your general dentist ASAP after completion of your root canal.  Do not chew food on the affected side until your tooth is covered with a protective restoration provided by your restorative dentist. Your treatment is not complete until your dentist has placed a permanent restoration.
